Wae Rebo

Wae Rebo is a small, very out of the way village. Wae Rebo is completely surrounded by panoramic mountains and the dense Todo forest. This tropical forest is rich in vegetation. Wae Rebo’s main characteristics are their unique houses, which they call Mbaru Niang that are tall and conical in shape and are completely covered in lontar thatch from its rooftop down to the ground. It appears that at one time such kind of houses were quite common to the region. But today, it is only this village that continues to maintain the typical Manggarai traditional house, without which these unique houses would have been completely fazed out.

Liang Bua

Liang Bua is a cave in a limestone hill in Manggarai District, Flores. The local community is familiar with this cave because of its huge size (50 meters long, 40 meters wide, and 25 meters tall). Due to its size, it was once used as a religious worship place and school. Liang Bua is famous the world over following the finding of an ancient skull. The skull was that of a short human called Homo floresiensis, found at a depth of 6 meters. Its brain measured only 380 cc (compared to a minimum 1,200 cc for a normal modern human brain). Archaeologists are of the opinion that this skull originated from an era back in time some 18,000 years ago. In addition, in a depth of 10.7 meters, ancient animal bones were also found including those of stegodon (an ancient elephant), komodo, turtles, and lizards.

Mount Kelimutu

Kelimutu (pronounced [kəliˈmutu]) is a volcano, close to the small town of Moni in central Flores island in Indonesia. It is around 50 km (31 mi) to the east of Ende, Indonesia, the capital of Ende regency in East Nusa Tenggara province. It has three volcanic crater lakes that differ in color.

Padar Island

Padar island is fast becoming a new favorite place for a traveler to visit. With outstanding panorama, it is indeed somewhere you should put on top of your travel list, while in Labuan Bajo. There are three majorities of ethnic groups, namely the Manggarai, Bima, and Bugis. Living side by side with them are people coming from other parts of Flores, like Ende, Ngada, Maumere, Chinese descendants and more from all over Indonesia. You can meet some of the locals in their beautiful village of Labuan Bajo. The Melo village, in West Manggarai is known as one of the tourism villages that travelers would come by. Welcoming ceremonies and traditional dances will greet you warmly upon your visit. It is a beautiful village, located around 40 km from the heart of Labuan Bajo.

Cunca Wulang Waterfall

The Cunca Wulang is about 30 kilometers to the east of Labuan Bajo, which can be reached in about an hour drive. This location has a clear river valley water flow and is surrounded by artistic rock formations, thus making this waterfall as the Grand Canyon miniature found in Arizona, America. In Indonesian, “cunca wulang” means “waterfall and moon”. This waterfall is located at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level making the atmosphere of this place is very cool. At first glance, you will feel that you are in the “Grand Canyon” when arriving in this place because there is a river flow between the cliffs of large rocks. The waterfall is above the rocks and the waters come out through the gaps in the rocks.
